Deeper into Indian classical vocal music in Dhrupad
style
- Singing a Râga,
it will reveal its essence, its rules, its effects and beauty
to you. It will unfold into yourself endowing you with its qualities.
You will learn to improvise on the Alâp,
the contemplative part of the Râga, experiencing it as a
meditation and a way of worshiping; the Alâp is sung with
plain sacred syllables evolved from original Mantra. The Alâp
is the expression of the musical idea.
- Singing compositions on various Tâla
(rhythmic cycles) you will be initiated to the Indian rhythms
and through them learn to regulate your own inner rhythms.
The compositions are poems sung on given rhythms; most of those
poems are indeed prayers in praise of the divine under some
of
its miscellaneous forms. They can praise to God with or without
forms and attributes. Some poems are describing a particular
Râga
or particular aspects of music. It can also be Sufi poetry or
even praise to a monarch.
